Students are selected for membership through local school chapters. Students who have been enrolled at the school for the equivalent of one semester and who meet their chapter’s cumulative GPA requirement (Scholarship) are candidates for membership. Candidates are then considered for membership based on meeting their chapter’s requirements for service, leadership, and character. Membership decisions are made by the chapter’s 5-member faculty council, and a majority vote of the council is required for selection.
In conjunction with, and as an extension of the Student Government Association, our chapter strives to give practical meaning to the Society’s standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four ideals are considered as the basis for selection. No student is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Honor Society strives to recognize the total student—one who excels in all of these areas.
The standards used for selection are:
1. Scholarship: 3.5 cumulative average on a 4.0 scale. Students must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA to maintain membership.
2. Leadership: Students should hold elected or appointed leadership roles in school, community, or work activities, or should demonstrate the desire and ability to direct or motivate others as chairpersons, members, captains, etc....of school and community activities.
3. Service: Students should have participated in individual or group service initiatives and projects either in or out of school. These service activities are those that are done for or on behalf of others (not including family members) for which no compensation (money or other) has been given.
4. Character: Students should uphold principles of morality and ethics., demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability, show courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and maintain a clean disciplinary record.
The O-W Chapter of the National Honor Society aims to sponsor or participate in at least two service projects per year (one per semester).
• If our NHS chapter is to be effective and meaningful, each member must become involved.
• All members are expected to be model student citizens toward everyone by exhibiting positive attitudes, behaviors, and mannerisms in the classroom, in the school building, as well as in the community.
• All members are expected to continue to be actively involved in individual service projects and activities.
• All members are expected to participate in Chapter meetings, projects, and activities.
