The Highlight Society
The Highlight Society (HLS)
Advisor, Mr. Michael McClain
The purpose of our prestigious organization, The Highlight Society, is to instill the virtues of brotherhood, manhood, leadership, and scholarship into all young men within a high school environment. We strive to excel in any and everything that we do.
The true value of our organization is not measured in numbers, but in MEN, the real Brotherhood. Eight men thoroughly immersed in the true Blue Spirit are far greater assets than eighty with lukewarm enthusiasm. Do thy duty, that is best. Leave unto the Lord the rest.
The Highlight Society ( History )
The Highlight Society was founded in 1936 by a group of masons and elks at Dunton High School, South Carolina. It was lost for 10 years and reestablished in 1946 by Dr. Robert E. Howard, Mr. James B. Hunt and others at Wilkinson High School. The organization was found to instill the virtues of brotherhood, manhood, leadership and scholarship among young men. When the Highlight Society was originally founded, their mascot was Knight. The knight exemplified the virtues of honor, valor, integrity, chivalry, and skill. After HLS was reestablished at Wilkinson High School, their mascot then became a dog in honor of the affiliation of the men responsible. These men were the members of the Greek Letter Fraternity Omega Psi Phi Incorporated. The Highlight Society has been going 70+ years now and continues to grow every year at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.
